About G4L
Grandmas4Literacy is a community-driven effort led by local grandmothers who believe every child deserves a chance to become a strong reader — and that they can be part of the solution.
In Philadelphia, many children struggle to read; 67.5% of School District of Philadelphia 3rd graders scored below proficiency on the literacy sections of the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) tests. Falling behind early produces unfortunate ripple effects.
We know from experience that kids thrive when they feel seen, supported, and understood. Grandmothers not only bring wisdom and patience, but deep community roots. We are training grandmothers in proven, science-based literacy techniques, placing them in schools, after-school programs, and family homes to provide one-on-one reading counseling and emotional support.
We help grandparents and caregivers decode the jargon schools send home so families can better advocate for their kids. We use creativity — such as our crochet-and-read program — to make literacy a joyful and culturally relevant experience.
Grandmas4Literacy isn’t a one-time fix. This movement shows the possibilities when older women are recognized and supported as change-makers in education. We are here to raise readers, raise awareness, and raise expectations.
